Baptism

"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy spirit." - Matthew 28:19

Dear Parents,

Congratulations on the birth of your child!  We are happy to support your choice to have your baby baptized in the Catholic faith tradition.  Here at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist, we want to share your faith journey with your child.  We believe that every child is a precious gift of God. As you begin to bring up your child in the Catholic Church, you may discover you have some questions and we are here to answer your questions.

Our Baptism Preparation Program is designed to help parents appreciate the religious significance and meaning behind the rich symbols of your child's Baptism ceremony.  We will also share with you the rituals and traditions of the Catholic faith, and the responsibility and joy of being the first teachers for your children in matters of faith.

For your child to be baptized here at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, we require that parents take part in a Baptism Preparation class to assist you in the significant responsibility of raising your child in the Catholic faith.  During this class, we will discuss the Sacrament of Baptism, its meaning for you and for your child, and what you can expect on the day of your child’s Baptism.

We ask that you view the short video on this page Bishop Barron on the Sacrament of Baptism, prior to your class.  In this video, Bishop Barron unlocks the Sacrament of Baptism as the door and gateway to all of Christian life and explains how the other sacraments flow naturally from the life of grace planted in each believer’s soul through Baptism.  In addition, he speaks about how the Sacrament of Baptism plays a foundational role in our redemption by removing the stain of Original Sin.
