Liturgy & Sacraments

The celebration of the liturgy is central to
the life of our community.
It is “the summit toward which the activity
of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the fount from which
all the Church’s power flows” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy,
1963). We are strengthened for service to our community and our world by
prayer and especially by the celebration of the Eucharist. Our ministry
in the name of Jesus draws us ever more fully to prayer and praise.
Liturgy Schedule
Parishioners and friends of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist
celebrate a wide variety of liturgies and devotions. The Eucharist
(Mass, both daily and weekly); Liturgy of the Hours (in Morning and
seasonal Evening Prayer); Reconciliation (Confession); Anointing of
the Sick; the Stations of the Cross are just a few examples.

Sacraments
"The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the
Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments. There are seven sacraments
in the Church: Baptism, Confirmation (or Chrismation), Eucharist,
Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony."
Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1113.

Sacraments you may begin with an

Liturgical
Ministries
The Second Vatican Council called the whole Church to reflect on the
role of the laity in the Church. It reminded us that all Christians,
by virtue of their baptism, are called to spread the gospel, to
continue the work of building the Kingdom of God, and, most
especially, to offer worship.
The Cathedral provides all parishioners
with the opportunity to regularly celebrate vibrant, faith-enriching
liturgy, Liturgical training, spiritual formation, and theological
education. All parishioners are invited and encouraged to share
their talents and interests with the Cathedral community by becoming
involved in a liturgical ministry.
For more information about liturgical
ministry at the Cathedral, you may begin with an
overview of or go
directly to the information for any specific ministry found in the
menu on the right under Liturgical Ministries.
